My Life as a Goldfish The goldfish is not to be loved.  The goldfish is a pet, but moreover, an object.  It grants the status "has goldfish", but does not actually mean anything. A cat is there to love and be loved, as is a dog. A goldfish is there to be owned; it is there to provide ownership, nothing more. No one has a relationship with a goldfish.  No one truly loves a goldfish.  It is there to be there. Nothing more, nothing less. No one schedules time to play with their goldfish.  They just feed it in passing, then leave it to its own devices. A goldfish does not need priority. A goldfish is there to be there.
